He gave up on the recruitment policy when he started bringing in the likes of Podolski, he was ruthless in his belief of selling players once they hit 30 yrs old prior to this complete reversal.
He went on record saying you have to spend to compete, but his and Arsenal's decline was brought about by the emergence of Abramovich at Chelsea and furthered by City's new found wealth.
However, this is why I believe the most important title in the last 20 or more years was that of Leicester's, which proved Wenger had lost his way and his beliefs should not have been abandoned and so publicly denounced .
Yes i cant disagree that chelsea had an impact on them back in the early 2000s when the russian bought the club but not so sure about the man city emergence having the same effect though ? hadnt the rot already set in by them ?
To be honest i,m not that bothered in looking into gooner stuff too deeply but i did notice how wenger got players like bergkamp, overmars, pires, ljunberg, henry, petit, viera etc at reasonable prices and that sort of bargain recruitment went on for years before it died a death for him ! i just thought his overseas connections had dried up or just wised up to the massive profits the goons were making on these players when sold on.
Must admit i was a bit jealous that spurs werent anywhere near to getting players of the quality wenger acquired when at his peak.
It made a nice change to see what they were having to fork out for players like ozil in 2013 ! had a little snigger to myself at the time because i honestly thought real madrid had robbed them blind for the player and 7 years on they still cant get rid of him or his massive wages.
