He’s been probably the most talented player at White Hart Lane for a long time. If you try to think of a more talented player in the last 20 years then the list of names that flashes through your head is an impressive one; Klinsmann, Ginola, Gascoigne, Edinburgh, Hoddle.
He is undoubtedly a football genius. His apparent off-field persona only supports this aura he beholds. He reads books (remember he’s a footballer). He doesn’t like the attention and focus of being famous. He smokes (albeit in a trying-to-look-cool manner rather than a tormented-genius manner).
He seems to be a moody and miserable git, much like myself. Yet if I were to spend an afternoon in the pub with him, smoking like chimneys and drinking some lethal Bulgarian floor cleaner, I think I’d soon realise we had little else in common.
I can imagine long periods of silence or, at best, one word responses to any questions regarding his thoughts on the latest author he was reading. This would be interrupted only by flamboyant gestures and stamping of the feet when I refuse to go to the bar again because he can’t be bothered.
I’m sure I would soon grow tired of his selfish, petulant attitude and think to myself ‘that’s the last time I go for a drink with that tosser’. Apparently some of the players had a meeting with Ramos to say much the same thing replacing ‘drink’ with ‘kickabout’ and you can hardly blame them.
Now he’s refusing to play for the club that gave him the platform to showcase his talents to the footballing world. I can understand him wanting to move on to a bigger and better club, which Man Utd undoubtedly are. I wouldn’t normally begrudge him his dream move. What I cannot understand is how he wasn’t mentally right to play what could have been his last match at WHL a few days after banging them in for Bulgaria. If he’s worried about the crowd reaction then is he going to refuse to play at WHL for Man Utd? It doesn’t quite fit with his nonchalant attitude.
Apparently his agent (who makes me think of a Bulgarian Del boy) is trying to force a move through immediately. Other reports are claiming that Berbatov can be left to rot in the reserves. Wouldn’t this be great? If we forget for a moment how much he is worth financially, forget how much damage could be done to his price and career growth, forget that we’d be denying the game one of the greatest talents to currently grace it. If we forget all this and make a stand against Man Utd, Berbatov, his agent, player power, mercenaries, the puttana that is the English Premier League and modern day football in general, wouldn’t it be fantastic?
Surely it would make up for the way we behaved with Jol? We may not qualify for the Champions League again but at least we could hold our heads up high if, as last season, we finish 11th.
So please, Daniel Levy and Juande Ramos, let him rot in the reserves.
